Artistic direction for Chy-an-Albany

As part of its current refit and refurbishment, the Chy-an-Albany Hotal has chosen to take a new, artistic, direction with its decor and style. Not only is it a new departure for the hotel, this new direction will also help promote local artists and benefit the RNLI.

The three star hotel has already taken more Christmas bookings than this time last year and one reason is the re-branding of the hotel’s restaurant to The Lighthouse Restaurant. Throughout the ground floor bar, restaurant and reception, the hotel will be displaying work of local artists with the idea of becoming a “gallery hotel”.

Lighter coloured walls emphasise the ‘art-deco’ lighting and are a perfect backdrop for the new works commissioned from local artists. The works provide a warm, inviting and comfortable which will attract customers who will also enjoy a new table arrangement.

It is planned that the art will also extend to the 46 rooms with each one being a unique exhibition space for one artist per room which will then be named after that artist. Clive Perryman was one of the first artists to be commissioned by owners Richard Holgate and Andre Wintersgill and on Tuesday 17th Nov 2009 Mr Perryman presented Godrevy, a six foot high work depicting a lighthouse, to Mr Wintersgill, Godrevy was created in Clive’s Bellair Terrace attic studio from a re-claimed scaffold planking and will be displayed beside the restaurant’s entrance. Some of the twelve artists on display will be Catherine Stringer, Brett Humphries and Tom Henderson-Smith with more still to come.

Proceeds from the sale of the artwork will be split between the artist with a 10% donation to the RNLI.

Mr Perryman comments: “This is an exciting and interesting step which enhances an exciting new restaurant in a beautiful location. Simultaneously it provides a framework promoting the work of St Ives’ artists and a warm inviting atmosphere.”
